Adding to the collection of vocabulary building apps

Today we uploaded our latest vocabulary building app to Apple for approval to be entered into the iTunes App store. If all goes as planned, the app should be available in about 10 to 15 days, sometime after October 25 th. We started off with a first grade edition, but plan to quickly add preschool, kindergarten, second and third grade editions.

Meghan’s Spelling Quiz is an interactive app that helps your child learn to spell basic grade level specific words. The quiz utilizes the same word lists as Meghan’s Word Flash and Matching Games providing continuity in developing your child’s vocabulary.

There are two types of quizzes available; Random and Alphabetical and the quiz length is configurable from 10 to 50 words. At the end of the quiz, the percent number correct is displayed, along with the option to retry the same quiz or to start a new one.

Sight Words are in Meghan’s Memory Games

Meghan's Memory GameSight words (also known as Dolch words) do not follow the basic phonics so they cannot be “sounded out” as they are read. They need to be learned by sight! That’s where Meghan’s Memory games come in. Each grade/age specific game contains the sight words for that group. Meghan’s Memory Games will help your child to recognize and identify sight words by utilizing them as the game pieces that are matched together in a memory game. So, not only is your child’s concentration and attention skills being developed, but they are learning sight words at the same time.

Meghan boosts her reading score!

One of the light bulb moments I experienced in making the decision to start RatCat Software and to build iPhone apps came one day watching my daughter struggle with reading. For the first 3 marking periods of school this past year she consistently came home with a C on her report card in the reading category. Everything else, straight A’s. I thought to myself there has to be some way we can help boost her ability to read and understand the words on her grade level. A way that would be fun yet educational. I did a bit of web searching and found some really neat websites. We became especially found of spellingcity. One of the games that they offer is a memory match, which gave me the inspiration to create a similar game for the iPhone and iPod touch. Hence, Meghan’s Memory Games where born. Now the grades are in for the final period and bingo, Meghan raised her score to a B. Now is this conclusive evidence that Meghan’s Memory Games improve reading skills… Probably not.. But Meghan thinks so!

Good Job Meghan, we are proud of you!

Time to get an iPhone 3GS!

According to the AppleBlogs twitter coverage of the WWDC 2009 conference in San Francisco I had been following today, Apple just announced that it will release the iPhone OS 3.0 on June 17th. There will also be a new iPhone coming out on June 19th, the iPhone 3GS (S for SPEED). They boosted the camera, added auto-focus and video capture. They also claim extended battery life and a starting price for the 16gb unit at $199.
This is great news, we had been holding off on purchasing the iPhone and have been exclusively doing our development testing on the iPod Touch.  We are also pleased because our recent releases of Meghan’s Memory Game passed the 3.0 test Apple had began at the beginning of May.  Now we need to incorporate some of those new features into our apps! Preschool edition now on iTunes

mmgpNow available on iTunes, Meghan’s Memory Game Preschool for the iPhone and iPod Touch contains over 200 age appropriate words. This edition kicks off with the V1.2 game engine!

The idea behind the game is for your preschooler to remember the position of the words that have been revealed on previous turns. It is a great game to develop attention, learn new words and sharp listening skills.

Meghan’s Memory Game Preschool starts with twelve cards. The player is instructed to find the matching pairs of cards until the board is cleared. To help develop reading skills, as each card is selected a real voice announces the word. As a match is made Meghan praises the great effort with phrase like “Good Job” and “Awesome”. When the board is cleared a surprising splash screen is displayed with sounds of children cheering and some more praises from Meghan. The second level fills the screen with additional cards and the game concludes when the player completes the matches. Both the number of tries and the score is kept during game play.

Features:
- Grade appropriate word matching
- Spoken words
- Two levels of difficulty
- Engaging and educational gameplay
- Sharpens memory skills
- Develops reading and word recognition

Enhancements to Meghan’s Memory Game engine V1.2:
- More time to read the words when non matching cards are flipped over.
- Sound effects during card flips to make the game a bit more fun for the little ones.
