Here are some FREE copies of Meghan’s Spelling Quiz

It’s really hard to believe that it has been over 1 year since we founded RatCat Software. Starting with a shoe string budget, a bunch of crazy ideas on how to code and grew into a small iPhone App Developer with 18 apps approved and listed in the App Store. Some of which have been listed in the top 100 on several occasions (My FireFighter came close to the top 25!) and most of which are still to this day listed among the top 200 app for the educational and/or games/educational categories.

As a way to say Thank You to our many customers and to continue celebrating our 1 year anniversary we decided to give away a some copies of Meghan’s Spelling Quiz to the first 20 people who email us. Let us know what version you would like (pre-school to 3rd grade) and how you heard about our give away and we will email you a promotional code to use in iTunes to download your free copy.

Thanks Again! – The Development Team at RatCat Software!

Meghan boosts her reading score!

One of the light bulb moments I experienced in making the decision to start RatCat Software and to build iPhone apps came one day watching my daughter struggle with reading. For the first 3 marking periods of school this past year she consistently came home with a C on her report card in the reading category. Everything else, straight A’s. I thought to myself there has to be some way we can help boost her ability to read and understand the words on her grade level. A way that would be fun yet educational. I did a bit of web searching and found some really neat websites. We became especially found of spellingcity. One of the games that they offer is a memory match, which gave me the inspiration to create a similar game for the iPhone and iPod touch. Hence, Meghan’s Memory Games where born. Now the grades are in for the final period and bingo, Meghan raised her score to a B. Now is this conclusive evidence that Meghan’s Memory Games improve reading skills… Probably not.. But Meghan thinks so!

Good Job Meghan, we are proud of you!

Preschool edition now on iTunes

mmgpNow available on iTunes, Meghan’s Memory Game Preschool for the iPhone and iPod Touch contains over 200 age appropriate words. This edition kicks off with the V1.2 game engine!

The idea behind the game is for your preschooler to remember the position of the words that have been revealed on previous turns. It is a great game to develop attention, learn new words and sharp listening skills.

Meghan’s Memory Game Preschool starts with twelve cards. The player is instructed to find the matching pairs of cards until the board is cleared. To help develop reading skills, as each card is selected a real voice announces the word. As a match is made Meghan praises the great effort with phrase like “Good Job” and “Awesome”. When the board is cleared a surprising splash screen is displayed with sounds of children cheering and some more praises from Meghan. The second level fills the screen with additional cards and the game concludes when the player completes the matches. Both the number of tries and the score is kept during game play.

Features:
- Grade appropriate word matching
- Spoken words
- Two levels of difficulty
- Engaging and educational gameplay
- Sharpens memory skills
- Develops reading and word recognition

Enhancements to Meghan’s Memory Game engine V1.2:
- More time to read the words when non matching cards are flipped over.
- Sound effects during card flips to make the game a bit more fun for the little ones.

Meghan’s Memory Game Preschool edition is in the bag!

Today I was able to finish up coding some important changes to the way the cards display when being selected and complete the coding of a 1.2 version of the game. In earlier versions, the cards flip over a bit too fast for little readers to be able to fully grasp what they are looking at. So, to make the game play more enjoyable and hopefully more educational I spent a good bit of time re-engineering how things work. I had to incorporate a game play timer and spawn off a thread to flip the cards after about a second of time has passed. The results look very good and we are excited to see how this change is received as we incorporate it into the other editions. Also new to this version and especially geared toward the younger players of the game are some extra sound effects when cards are flipped back over. The Preschool edition should hit the store on or about the 15th of May.
